A class of smoothing functions for nonlinear and mixed complementarity problems

چکیده
We propose a class of parametric smooth functions that approximate the fundamental plus function, (x) + =maxf0; xg, by twice integrating a probability density function. This leads to classes of smooth parametric nonlinear equation approximations of nonlinear and mixed complementarity problems (NCPs and MCPs). For any solvable NCP or MCP, existence of an arbitrarily accurate solution to the smooth nonlinear equation as well as the NCP or MCP, is established for suuciently large value of a smoothing parameter. Newton-based algorithms are proposed for the smooth problem. For strongly monotone NCPs, global convergence and local quadratic convergence are established. For solvable monotone NCPs, each accumulation point of the proposed algorithms solves the smooth problem. Exact solutions of our smooth nonlinear equation for various values of the parameter , generate an interior path, which is diierent from the central path for interior point method. Computational results for 52 test problems compare favorably with those for another Newton-based method. The smooth technique is capable of solving eeciently the test problems solved by Dirkse & Ferris 8], Harker & Xiao 13] and Pang & Gabriel 30].

Continuation method for nonlinear complementarity problems via normal maps
In a recent paper by Chen and Mangasarian (C. Chen, O.L. Mangasarian, A class of smoothing functions for nonlinear and mixed complementarity problems, Computational Optimization and Applications 2 (1996), 97±138) a class of parametric smoothing functions has been proposed to approximate the plus function present in many optimization and complementarity related problems. This paper uses these sm...
متن کاملSmoothing Functions and A Smoothing Newton Method for Complementarity and Variational Inequality Problems
In this paper, we discuss smoothing approximations of nonsmooth functions arising from complementarity and variational inequality problems. We present some new results which are essential in designing Newton-type methods. We introduce several new classes of smoothing functions for nonlinear complementarity problems and order complementarity problems. In particular, in the first time some comput...
متن کاملA Global Linear and Local Quadratic Noninterior Continuation Method for Nonlinear Complementarity Problems Based on Chen-Mangasarian Smoothing Functions
A non-interior continuation method is proposed for nonlinear complementarity problems. The method improves the non-interior continuation methods recently studied by Burke and Xu 1] and Xu 29]. Our deenition of neighborhood for the central path is simpler and more natural. In addition, our continuation method is based on a broader class of smooth functions introduced by Chen and Mangasarian 7]. ...
متن کاملUniform nonsingularity and complementarity problems over symmetric cones
Abstract. We study the uniform nonsingularity property recently proposed by the authors and present its applications to nonlinear complementarity problems over a symmetric cone. In particular, by addressing theoretical issues such as the existence of Newton directions, the boundedness of iterates and the nonsingularity of B-subdifferentials, we show that the non-interior continuation method pro...
متن کاملNon-Interior continuation methods for solving semidefinite complementarity problems
There recently has been much interest in non-interior continuation/smoothing methods for solving linear/nonlinear complementarity problems. We describe extensions of such methods to complementarity problems defined over the cone of block-diagonal symmetric positive semidefinite real matrices. These extensions involve the Chen-Mangasarian class of smoothing functions and the smoothed Fischer-Bur...
